The Sumner Mansion is one of the few preserved examples of the early work of Asher Benjamin, who after leaving Vermont for Boston, became famous for his influence in the Greek Revival in Colonial architectural designs. His later work still can be seen on Beacon Hill and other historic areas of Boston. David Sumner, a prominent lumber businessman, owned and occupied this home during his most prosperous years (1811-1867). The Sumner Mansion, said to be one of the best examples of Federal Architecture in Vermont, has been owned by only four families since 1807. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
