Located in beautiful southeastern West Virginia (WV), Organ Cave is the second largest commercial cave in the eastern United States, and one of the oldest commercial caves in the country. A Natural National Landmark, and a National Historic Landmark, with over 45 miles of mapped passageways. We have people that were part of the mapping grottos and also private surveyors that say the cave is over 70 miles long. The West Virginia and Virginia Cave Conservancies say we will probably never know the length of Organ Cave because of the complex system. Organ Cave is the 27th largest cave in the world and there are still 200 known passageways that have yet to be explored. Everyday the longest cave list will change and the position of a cave will change, but Organ Cave has remained in the top 30 since the list was created. 2004 was a special year for us at Organ Cave, as it marked our 300-year anniversary. Colonial pioneers discovered the cave in 1704. We have other writings that date back farther than the 1704, but this date is the date used because it is very readable. Organ Cave has played a significant role in American history, as well as providing a living laboratory for scientists in the fields of geology, archeology, biology and paleontology.
