It was on one of those golden late autumn days of preternatural clarity that I drove up the 'No Through Road' to Fairburn Farm, BC. Unravelling myself from the car, I took a few minutes just breathing in the magical view across the Koksilah Ridge: a sea of trees shimmering away to the horizon, and not a sound to disturb the bright morning air. I loved it already. But the best was yet to come, for Anthea and Darrel are the proud owners of the only herd of River Water Buffalo in North America. Coming face to face with these noble beasts (and their excellent hairstyles) is a great experience. With 29 animals at present, plans are afoot to set up a dairy. Soon youll be spooning buffalo yoghurt over your granola. Fairburn Farm has always been a pioneering kind of place. Darrels parents bought it in 1955 and started the first organic co-op in Canada; the same philosophy persists today. Vegetables, herbs and grains are all home-grown and Anthea even grinds her own grain for bread. This is a true retreat. Endless forest and pasture surround you and a beautiful creek winds lazily along the bottom of the ridge.
