Dalvay-by-the-Sea was commissioned in 1895 as a summer home for Alexander McDonald. McDonald was born in Scotland but moved with his family to the United States during the immigrant boom of the mid - 19th century. He eventually settled in Cincinnati, Ohio where he showed a prowess for business, becoming the first president of Standard Oil and building a considerable personal fortune. McDonald became intrigued with Prince Edward Island's North shore while on vacation with his family in 1895 and commissioned a Victorian summer "cottage" to be built.
