Nestled in dense forested land, Cherokee Hills Campground once held an encampment of Cherokee people who fled the Trail of Tears soon after their trecherous crossing of the Mississippi River in the harsh winter of 1838-39. The campground is surrounded by area that played a huge part in the history of the Mighty Mississippi River. Southeast Missouri State University is located in Cape Girardeau which is 13 miles from our park. |
